How to make the most of your space with a rug
While a rug may have been an afterthought once upon a time, it’s now one of the most important decisions we make when decorating. A rug can completely transform how a room looks, pulling everything together to give it that picture-perfect look.
So, if you’re wondering how to make the most of your space with a new rug and what to consider when choosing a rug, here are some of our top tips.
Identify your style
Firstly, it’s important to identify your interior style, so when you start to think about the design of your rug, you choose one that will complement your space and not clash with it.
You may want to contrast a dark floor with a light rug - or vice versa. Or why not add a statement rug to a neutral room? Whatever you decide, a well-considered rug will be an investment that is well worth it.
Choose the right shape and size
The perfect-sized rug can make a huge difference to your space. So, before deciding on the shape and size of your rug, it’s important to think about your room. If a rug is too big, it can be overwhelming, but if a rug is too small, it can have the opposite effect. We aim for a rug to not touch the walls, and for it to be around 12 inches away if possible.
We would also recommend measuring your room and your furniture beforehand, too. The last thing you want is to purchase the rug of your dreams, only for it to not sit under the sofa the way you imagined or for it to curl up at a wall.
Accessorise
If you haven’t already, you can always accessorise your new rug. Think layers for a cosy, more homely look - like a coffee table, which could be accessorised further with plants (we love to add a bit of green).
Consider who will use it
Another important thing to contemplate when choosing a new rug is who will use it, so you can decide on the best and most suitable texture. If it’s going somewhere with a high footfall, you’ll want a durable rug with a bit of longevity. If your rug is going to be placed in a room with less running around, one that you’re more likely to cosy up on, then a thicker, more comfortable rug might be more suitable.
